Selling over 15,000 objects per year, it would be logical for the staff of Garth’s to get a little tired of the topic of antiques and collectibles. “Never,” comments Amelia Jeffers, President of the internationally renowned auction firm. “We have the greatest jobs: every day is like Christmas! Working with diverse consignments, we learn something new every day.” Hoping to propagate their passion for history and material culture, the Garth’s team developed a summer writing contest for kids of all ages: author a fictional biography of an object, based on factual information regarding it’s origins. In September 2012, the inaugural winners in three categories (adult, teen and child) were awarded prize packages that totalled more than $3,000 including e-books, gift cards and subscriptions to the who’s who of antique periodicals. The most popular prize? Having their stories published. Garth’s is bringing the contest back by popular demand in 2013.
